“Heard it through the grapevine”
When telegraph stations started cropping up all over North America, operators quickly found that the wires were often messy and twisted, somewhat like a grapevine. Soon enough, the term “I heard it through the grapevine” started making its rounds, and it became a common idiom that we still hear today.
