We received a message from Kentucky’s Derby City Chive Chapter yesterday morning. One of their members had travelled to Cincinnati to undergo a major surgery. Daniel Humphrey was to have one of his kidneys removed and given to a person in need.
He was awarded no money for the procedure, which comes with all the risks of any major surgery. He will miss two weeks of work to recover (goodbye, vacation). And according to the American Transplant Foundation, there has been no long-term data collected on the risks of becoming a living donor.
But here’s where this story will really make you think. Humphrey doesn’t know the recipient. When he signed up to go under the knife, he knew he was making the massive sacrifice for someone he had never met. A complete and utter stranger.
