seed cathedral 51 Not an illusion. Thats a real building (10 Photos)
Looking like a hedgehog with over 60,000 7.5m-long transparent acrylic rods shooting out of the building, the United Kingdom Pavilion will debut at the Shanghai World Expo. The cost? Only about $40 Million. Aside from impaling skydivers, the revolutionary structure is expected to host almost 250,000 people a day.

    looks like a tribble… hope it doesn’t begin multiplying…

  4. ANTSY says:

Ah man….. You missed out the biggest and most important feature of this building… Its actually a “seed library”. Which explains picture 7.

Encased within each acrylic rod is a seed. So in the event a particular species is extinct, they can re-germinate them…!

    • HellHathNoFury says:

That’s so freakin awesome! I think it would be so much cooler if they put herb seeds on each with soil packed in, so when it rains, it look like a giant chia pet.

      • garp says:

…I dunno, we’re putting a lot of faith in some future generation that on onehand causes an extinction but then also has the as-of-yet-undiscovered ability to remove a fragile seed from acrylic encasement, or gives a shit to….hey R2D2, do you remember where we put those acrylic shafts?

        • ROR says:

and a lot of faith that whatever gets used to wipe out the plants won’t also blow this building straight to hell, which would make this building a epic waste of time.

  10. big dog says:

    Where is the door?

  11. CMG says:

You’ll have to put that thing far from any trees. Imagine cleaning fallen leaves from it. :O

  12. LOL says:

All I see is a BOATLOAD of power washing/dusting. Yeah cool…kinda…but the real purpose is what? Making it just because we can? We could do what with the $40 million? Save a lot more than 60,000 seeds. Doing the math on that, it comes out to $666.67 per seed…hmmm…coincidence? Just sayin’…
