  1. Matt says:

looks like an old battleship that retired to the bottom of the sea. pretty cool.

  2. Train says:

Nice timing, with that “incident” in North Korea.

  3. HellHathNoFury says:

Sometimes I would love nothing more than to see the aircraft carriers at PSNS do this. *waits for Feds to blow my door in and seize computers*

  4. Equalizer says:

    You already post this before

  5. Mustafa_Beer says:

Last one looks like a star wars prototype

  6. Eric says:

Torpedo’s carry a scary amount of BOOM in them….the explosive power it takes to rip that much steel in half is down right ginormous!

    • Rusty says:

The explosion isn’t what actually kills the ship. There’s some direct-effect damage from the blast, sure, but the REAL killer is the ship’s own weight.

A correctly placed torpedo will explode directly underneath the center of the ship – just as happened to the ship in this set of pictures – and the explosion will displace the water underneath the center of the ship. For a small enough ship – like this one – it will also put some lift on the center of the ship. Now, the weight of the ship is only supported at the bow and the stern, instead of even support throughout, and the hull is NOT designed to handle that … so, it snaps in half.

Just like happened here. (Although, this was a small enough ship that it looks like it started to buckle on the way up, from the displacement upwards of the bubble from the explosion.)

  7. roger says:

That definitely was NOT a battleship. A cruiser maybe.

    • HellHathNoFury says:

Forgive us, Captain Obvious, for having some pop-culture fun with the title instead of delivering the class, name and origin of this particular destroyer.

      • dom112 says:

Its the Ex destroyer escort HMAS Torrens (DE53) Royal Australian Navy. Nuff said?

        • HellHathNoFury says:

Ha! Called it. And Jose, I can write one up for you if you’d like. Destroyers are much easier to lay blueprints for than say, an aircraft carrier or Los angeles or Ohio class nuc sub

    • jeff in Australia says:

At the great and ever present danger of being viciously attacked with words that will hurt me more than sticks and stones.

It looks to me more broke than sunk…

PS. I’m allowed… my taxes paid for that ship..!

  8. Jose Biscuits says:

Nah, I want a full blueprint of the hull. Now.

  9. Camel Joe says:

if you ever happen to see an aircraft carrier blown up it would be “premature” to not shit your pants.

  10. Rusty says:

Test of the Mk48 torpedo, IIRC. Pretty badass weapon.

I got to participate in a SINKEX some years back, of one of the old LHA’s. Tough old bitch …

First the subs put torpedoes into her – three Mk48′s, between the two SSNs – and that didn’t kill her. Then the carrier’s air wing went to work. Bombs, missiles, etc. Still floating. Then 2 cruisers and 4 or 5 destroyers went to work with Harpoon. Still afloat. Next morning we had to put her under with gunfire.

Was a pretty awesome thing to see, actually.

  11. poppajo8 says:

I noticed this wasn’t a battleship too, and as I read these responses I was wondering if anyone else would comment. Not that it’s a big deal or anything, I just wondered if I was missing something.

  12. cowpoke says:

    Wow! Equalizer is back!
