This is actually pretty cheap to make if you already have the door frame. It would probably only coast around $50-$75 depending on your lumber you use. I'm thinking of giving it a try.

Wouldn't the piano hinge for the weight load on the shelving cost more than that?

Put it on 4 coaster wheels to support the weight (cost about $4 each), then you can use any hinge you want. It does not need to be floating off the ground. 1/8" to 1/4" in clearence on hardwood would be sufficent.

My door frame is actually built into the exterior wall of the original house so it is pretty thick and pretty stout. We used Oak to match with the rest of the wood in the house.

There really wasn't a ton of wood involved since the door was already framed. The back of the shelf is oak plywood; the sides and the shelves are actual oak and we cut some oak really thin to use as facings on the bookshelf where the wood had been cut.

I read the Assassins Trilogy from Robin Hobb… it didnt' have an ending, made me pretty upset.

I've only read the Soldier Son trilogy, not bad. Well written characters. Though, I think she tries to compensate for being female by being overly graphic at times. Try Martin, the Song of Ice and Fire series is pretty amazing.

I hope rand al thor makes it to the final battle against the dark one! fantastic good vs. evil set, THAT is what should be made into a theatrical version…. that is if money was no object. Robin Hobb is decent but i cant get into it like george rr martin or robert jordan. Anybody like Tad Williams?

Probably a good idea. A bookcase would be too conspicuous in your case since nobody would believe that you can read.

never; the books don't fall off. The door is really heavy so you'd have to try really hard to open or close the door hard enough to dislodge the books.

Plus, since the door is so heavy I'd be afraid to open or close it too hard (particularly open) as I don't want that much stress on the hinge.

One friend of mine had a 4 car garage with double roll up doors. Anyways, he has one side to look like it was a storage area and a fridge at the entrance. Open up the fridge and you could enter the man cave that had his jam room all set up……. a drum set 1 electric guitar and amp and a bass with an amp. It was fun to rock out and annoy the neighbors. The neat part was the surveillance set up, we could see the cops before they got to the house. By the time they knocked on the door, we had already quit playing and would open the garage doors and say what music? Man I miss those days sometimes.
