Some awesome dude made this for his dad's birthday.
ah, the mancave. I've had many dreams that look a lot like this
I'd build it and see how long I could hit its existence from my wife
that is awesome – when I get a house (again)I hope I can make something like that.
I'd need a direct line to the kitchen
Why not have a fridge inside the cave?? Half food/Half beer
Well Done sir.
hahaha well done
add in a shitter and I'd never come out!
This is actually pretty cheap to make if you already have the door frame. It would probably only coast around $50-$75 depending on your lumber you use. I'm thinking of giving it a try.
Wouldn't the piano hinge for the weight load on the shelving cost more than that?
Put it on 4 coaster wheels to support the weight (cost about $4 each), then you can use any hinge you want. It does not need to be floating off the ground. 1/8" to 1/4" in clearence on hardwood would be sufficent.
God damn engineers.
I'm only using one wheel on the left front side and it only touches the ground when the door is closed.
The hinge was pretty cheap; I picked it up at Lowes.
*hmph* I didn't know that' I'd figure they were more expensinve. *shrug* I have learned something new today!
My door frame is actually built into the exterior wall of the original house so it is pretty thick and pretty stout. We used Oak to match with the rest of the wood in the house.
yeah oak not be cheap, if a guy used mdf and was clever it could be 400-600$ and for oak wow
There really wasn't a ton of wood involved since the door was already framed. The back of the shelf is oak plywood; the sides and the shelves are actual oak and we cut some oak really thin to use as facings on the bookshelf where the wood had been cut.
… i'm crying tears of joy and jealousy right now.
but which book activiates the locking mechanism?
Something a wife would never read……how about a book about blowjobs.
Any cookbook for that matter…
Sorry bout your wife, bro.
I've always wanted a pool table in my house….now ave upped my game and want this "man-cave with secret entrance"
Hmm, I think I see some Robert Jordan, George R. R. Martin, Robin Hobb… Wait a second, HE STOLE MY BOOKS! I like him.
I read the Assassins Trilogy from Robin Hobb… it didnt' have an ending, made me pretty upset.
I've only read the Soldier Son trilogy, not bad. Well written characters. Though, I think she tries to compensate for being female by being overly graphic at times. Try Martin, the Song of Ice and Fire series is pretty amazing.
When will the wheel of time series finish!!! i swear im gonna die before it does. I hope rand al thor makes it to the final battle against the dark one! fantastic good vs. evil set, THAT is what should be made into a theatrical version…. that is if money was no object. Robin Hobb is decent but i cant get into it like george rr martin or robert jordan. Anybody like Tad Williams?
Ahh yes, the man cave….we all dream of it….right now I am settling for a section of my finished basement….My next house I am digging an underground man cave
Just like Anne Frank
I have a bookshelf like that, only it leads to the downstairs bathroom.
I want a secret sanctum! Only it will have a tree-fort entrance.
Probably a good idea. A bookcase would be too conspicuous in your case since nobody would believe that you can read.
An illiteracy joke! Bwahahaha! -_-
Awesome joke. Clearly the product of an imagination of biblical proportions. I doff my hat.
What's for the encore? "You smell!" or "Na-na-na-na-na!"?
I was thinking, in true juvenile form, it would be something along the lines of a scathing and emotionally devastating slight on my appearance.
would be cool to have a hollow tree with a spiral staircase going down to a sanctum.
Hmm, I think my comment was less juvenile and more clever than any comment that came after it. But that's just me.
Oh, and you smell and you're fat….or something. Does that make you feel better? You now have your juvenile comment so you can justify your own lame comebacks.
Really? Really, bro? Really. You make my head hurt.
I've seen something like this on instructables…
That's cool, they made the bedroom a mancave and let his wife sleep in the kitchen…
its cool, but its gonna suck when you drunk dive through and knock all the books off the shelf
Just as a point of clarification – I didn't make it for my dad's birthday; my dad and I built it for my house. It lets you enter an addition over my garage. Some more photos and a couple videos of it are here: http://picasaweb.google.com/bill.rawlinson/Secret…
It's still one helluva piece of work; well done on you and your Dad. B)
I wish I had something like that when the cops raided our college house, maybe could have fooled them….
I'm buying a house in the next year or two. I am so doing this.
So how many times a day do you think he had to pick up those books off the floor (because they fall when he opens the door- for those of you who need it spelled out) before he hot glued them all to the shelves…
never; the books don't fall off. The door is really heavy so you'd have to try really hard to open or close the door hard enough to dislodge the books.
Plus, since the door is so heavy I'd be afraid to open or close it too hard (particularly open) as I don't want that much stress on the hinge.
One friend of mine had a 4 car garage with double roll up doors. Anyways, he has one side to look like it was a storage area and a fridge at the entrance. Open up the fridge and you could enter the man cave that had his jam room all set up……. a drum set 1 electric guitar and amp and a bass with an amp. It was fun to rock out and annoy the neighbors. The neat part was the surveillance set up, we could see the cops before they got to the house. By the time they knocked on the door, we had already quit playing and would open the garage doors and say what music? Man I miss those days sometimes.
Hah. Sounds like a hell of a lot of fun.
