Except WInston Churchill turned out to be a drunk moron in the end, apparently nobody ever heard of Plan Unthinkable, where he planned on invading Russia immediately after WW2, where he would re-arm Nazi combatants to fight for their side. He was kicked out of Office ungracefully. he didn't step down.

        • mick0311

Actually , that thought was very prevalent immediately after WWII. Let's not forget that Russia wasn't exactly on "our side" for the duration of the war. Although the term "Cold War" makes it sound less dangerous and costly, the immediate decades were extremely expensive for all countries involved, which was most of us. Russia could have been rolled up quite easily at the end of the war, if the Allies (minus Russia) kept rolling East. They were at the end of their rope toward the end. They chased a German army in full retreat with nothing much more than old men and boys, raping and pillaging the whole way.

          • Yep

I seem to remember hearing that Patton was in on this as well.

        • AnyoneForCoffee

Actually no, he wasn't kicked out of office ungracefully.

During the war, the UK had a 'national government', a coalition of all the parties with Churchill at the head.

The first post-war election was only a few months after the end of the war and people's thoughts and priorities were not on the campaign. A great many people assumed the national government would continue and Churchill, being immensely popular and venerated as much as the King, would stay as PM. There was widespread shock when people began to realise that Churchill was no longer in charge.

Churchill returned as PM in 1951.

          • Stuart Finlay

I am afraid he was kicked out as the British people thought they would get a return to pre war conservative atyle rule under Churchill.
The labour government promised the people a better life with a health service and welfare.
Churchill didn’t run a very good campaign and lost.
It did him a favour as he was exhausted by the June of 1945.
His wife said it was a blessing in disguise.
He got back in in 1950 by which time the British people had seen through Labour.
He once said the Labour govt wasn’t fit to run a whelk stall never mind a country.

They have too much integrity to buy their way to the top, so instead they lead successful lives outside of the political sphere.

    • Heidi

I think that Oscar Wilde actually said #15.

  • Badasallgetout

He also said Keep Calm and Chive On… true story.

  • Shar11

    #1…nice….lol. very true

  • kingsize

he's a great actor – saw him in Dr. Who – but all those 'quotes ' would have been written by the writers?

    Dont get it.

They left out that quote. A pity, because it was one of his most famous.

    • Dirty Dingus

That pretty much applied to everything.

    • ROK247

      your comment is incontrovertible,
      malice may attack it,

glad to be British after reading this

    • Dodey G

      Better to be English

      • Midgetized

Better to learn History and realize he was simply a poster boy elected to keep moral up in the country; once he actually got hold of power, he tried to start WW3. So he really shouldn't be considered too much of an idol since he was a drunken idiot.

        • mick0311

Funny how different your view of history is than most. He was a great war-time leader, one of the best. That is a fact. Again, the fight with Russia afterwards would not have been as far-fetched as you believe, nor would it have been a "World War". Tell me, who would have been Russia's allies in this 3rd World War?

        • AnyoneForCoffee

          I assume you are trolling….

      • Dbswv

        yet im welsh 🙂

    Churchill's wit was incredible

    • Jack_LeMac

A playwright sends Churchill two tickets to his latest show; in the envelope is a letter from the playwright saying "I've sent a ticket to my latest show for you and a friend, if you have one." Churchill writes back, "Sorry I'll be busy that night, but I would love to come to your second showing, if you have one."
      Fuck yeah

  • justy_some_guy

I think his best may be "I've gotten more out of alcohol than alcohol has taken out of me."

  • Rocks Off

    #15 hahahahahahahaha.

  • Dude Imbibes

also… "The best argument against democracy is a five-minute conversation with the average voter."

    • truth

This is more true today than it ever has been.

    • JOHN

Thats actually the point of the constitution. Conflicting ideologies between morons arrests poor (*ahem* any) decision making… or should.

  • Gera

Are you sure he said ALL those things?

    • Gallus

Here is one of those cases where, if he didn't say them, he should have. Remember, the man was highly intelligent, well read and had a fine command of the language. If you have any doubts, just listen to his "blood, toil, tears and sweat" speech.

  • bulletstopper

They did a survey of British school children two years ago, and half of them thought Winston Churchill was a made up person and not real.
