Same-Side-Sitters: Acceptable or Annoying? (10 Photos)

You've all seen it, the couple at a restaurant voluntarily sitting on the same side of the table rather than facing each other. Some people find it to be a little awkward, others find it downright annoying; couples sitting side-by-side awkwardly craning their necks to talk to the other person inches away. Where do they put their elbows?

Many foodies and dining junkies will tell you same-side-sitting is aesthetically imbalanced (especially at a booth), it's just not proper restaurant etiquette, whatever that means.

My buddy's a waiter. He and his coworkers refer to same side sitters as “S3's (S Cubed)", or 'Triple S'. He added, "S3's are always the worst PDA in my place."

In their defense, same-side-sitters have many different reasons for their one-sided choice. Some are just trying to show extra affection, others like people watching. For many Triple S's, the seating arrangement just works for them, why should we care? Do you?

For younger couples it seems understandable (not acceptable or annoying, just understandable) The only time the wife and I sit next to one another is when we have our kids with us! Otherwise, we face each other, how else will we talk?! But really, when I'm at a restaurant, I could give a shit about other people, as long as they don't bother us during our meal!

My gf used to complain about me not sitting next to her at restaurants. I think S3's are annoying. The only exception: if the other chairs are going to be occupied. Also, my gf now agrees that S3 doesn't make sense.

  • S3, Bitch!

This doesn't annoy me at all. What DOES annoy me is a single person taking up a large group table. Give that person mean looks and squish in your group of 5 into a booth for 2.

So I like to get a hand job while enjoying a baked potato. Hater's gonna hate, bosses gonna cum on the underside of a table.

shit ive done this but i was told to it was kinda uncomfortable

  • Token

Damnit! Forcibly, I'm am guilting of this. My gf for some reason thinks its "cute". I find it a good time to check out what's going on in the restaurant or like priviously stated, to watch a big game or so.

    FML otherwise!

i think it's more annoying that people are willing to go to the extent of swearing about an issue as trivial as this. it may look a little off, but i can see plenty of reasons to justify sitting on the same side. take a chill pill, Chive, it's not like there's a Ugandan warlord involved this time.

I agree with this guy. What's the big deal. It seems to me that if people can't complain about same-side-sitters <sigh> they will find something else to complain about.

  • internet

    non issue. also, hitler

  • Alex

I do this so I can check out other girls while with my girl. Otherwise she would catch me looking and get in a big fight. Works great. You should try it.

    I do what I want!!

  • vesper003

What's wrong with sitting next to each other every once in a while to show affection? If it is all the time… yah I'd be annoyed but otherwise I think its sweet.

  • cookzone

The only time that this is acceptable is when the guy is getting a handjob/BJ. Just saying.

  • WTF?

Does this really matter? my boyfriend voluntarily sits next to me in restaurants for a number of reasons like it's easier to hear each other talking if the restaurant is crowded, it's easier to try food, sometimes we like to watch youtube videos while we're waiting for our food, etc. besides, whose business is it but ours where we want to sit in a restaurant? it's not about being co-dependent, it's not about us having to be within 6 inches of each other all the time, it's just a personal choice, big deal. It's really weird that people have such a problem with OTHER PEOPLE THEY DON'T EVEN KNOW doing what they want to do. this post has really got me disappointed in people.

And then you realize….. does it really make a damn bit of difference?

  • Chiver

    Who fucking CARES lol

  • guesty

I was with a girl on a date and i always sit otherside how ever she sent me a text told me to move closer and touch her 😉 so i sat next to her and we fondeled and kissed :)) so it can be a good thing but with friends and all nope

  • the-dude

I agree. Its so annoying when people go about their lives how they want to. I sit next to my wife when we dine. Why? Why not? For every reason there is not to do it, there is an equal and opposite reason to do it.

Not here to defend it. If you have an issue with people sitting next to each other, then god damn bru… you have serious fking issues.

    who cares – really
    first world problem?

Wow… way to rip off someone else's discussion! This was discussed on-air on KROQ on 3/27 and again on 3/28. Here's the blog:

    It's all about HJs…. noobs

  • MeatBeater

This is a really stupid thing to let bother you, Who Gives A Fuck if people want to sit together? I mean Jesus H, they sleep together so what? you'all need to pull your shitty panties out of your ass and worry about real things

  • Manimal

I literally did this with my girl on Monday. We both wanted to see the national championship game, and being a girl, she wanted to sit in a booth rather than at the bar. We sat on the same side, I was ok with it

  • Regina

I don't like to share my side but if one side of the table is a booth and the other has chairs, the husband and I will share the booth.

  • Brad

I do not care where they sit. I would only notice if she had that hot little sparkle in her eye like a chivette and is what I consider beautiful so I could steal some peeks or a smile, or if it was a clown. Then i would never take my eyes off it. Death to clowns!
