Time to start The X-Files then! πŸ™‚

        • http://dinkus.blog.com Emzilla

I actually picked up where I left off on Supernatural. πŸ™‚

          • Trav1121

I was kinda interested in that show but I was prejudice against the WB, thinking it would be Dawson's Creek with monsters. But then they had Reaper on that channel and that show was amazing. Might have to look into Supernatural. Enjoy! πŸ™‚

            • http://dinkus.blog.com Emzilla

It is friggen fantastic. It's no Dawson's Creek- however. Sam just pisses me off. Not so much his character, but the actor, I don't even remember his real name. XD

              • Trav1121

Haha Maybe I'll give it a whirl this weekend. Thanks for the tip, Em. KCCO! πŸ™‚

      Or have a newborn…

    • Lisa

It's actually a combat tactic that's been used for ages. There were whole ships of US GI's shipped back to the states due to sleep deprivation psychosis from the Pacific during WWII. Some of those guys spent the rest of their life in hospitals. After about 5 days of serious sleep deprivation, I myself experienced some gnarly side effects. It's serious stuff!

      • Trav1121

I remember that ep of the X-Files. Miss that show. 😦

  • Head Chef

    Has the chive put a block on the word O D D E E dot COM ?

        • Jeff

I never understood why people downvote for making observations like this. Its a fact. It's not that we don't like theCive (we're obviously visiting the site) but we just expect them to be original. No issues with it as long as they site sources btw

It's also up,up, down, down. And you don't have to be a hipster to know the Konami code just old enough to have played the original NES when you were growing up. πŸ™‚ Contra was impossible without the code!

  • dirtysteve99

#5 I thought the current theory leans away from that?

    • ezwelchman

yea i was just gonna say that it should say "dreams MAY carry deep meanings…" because there is definitely no proof that dreams have any meaning at all…scientists still don't even know why we dream….

      • rodolfo

Unfortunately, this post is promoting a lot of B.S. Bad Science. For instance, in controlling dreams it says "one dreams things one has witnessed…" Not necessarily. And dreams are only difficult to remember if you don't try to remember them immediately or are impaired during sleep. If you were an Australian Aborigine, for example, you would remember them, because your culture teaches you that Dreamtime is just as important, if not more than, being awake. As for dream symbolism, the claim that "dreams never utilize symbols they actually stand for" & "carry deep meanings that only the subconscious mind can understand" is pure conjecture. The first one, "we become temporarily paralyzed in the dream state" is complete poppycock. That means we would never shift position during a dream! Our understanding of dreaming is actually quite limited. Other than the fact if we are deprived of proper REM time we will lose our ability to function, some people can control their dreams sometimes, and all mammals dream, the specifics are are unknown at this point. I doubt the claim that some people dream in black and white. Maybe they only think they remember them that way!

        • Dr. Galt

As a neuroscientist, I have to mention some errors you made. What you said about temporary paralysis during REM sleep being "poppycock" is completely untrue, especially given your argument. You literally said that being temporarily paralyzed meant you would never shift positions in your sleep. The stupidity of that statement aside, REM sleep does involve complete postural muscle atonia, otherwise you literally would flail around so much you would wake yourself up. The thing about "only being able to dream things you have seen before" is misinformation, but based on the very true fact that any human face you see in a dream is one you have seen before, our brain is not capable of generating 100% true facial figures thanks to the evolutionarily more feasible mechanism of the STS and the FFA being able to recognize faces and store them very easily. Also, most of the time you don't remember dreaming unless you awaken from REM sleep is because information you dream is not integrated/learned. It is very transiently stored in a way so that as soon as we exit REM sleep, the information disappears. Also, even though dream analysis is completely pseudoscientific, the caption in that photo was actually inferring that dreams are not understandable by our conscious thought, and most likely nonsense. Also saying those statements are "pure conjecture" is silly without making a more logical counterpoint to disprove them. You just referred to those statements as an argument/opinion and left it at that.

How bored do you have to be to go around contriving posts like that?

  • bob

#11 oh, i definitely know when my dog is dreaming – she always yelps and twitches. chasing a squirrel, i guess.

    • J-Mark

My dog is always chasing something.. full on sprints while laying down sideways sleeping..haha

    • Master_Rahl

the Chive had a funny vid of a dog dreaming and whilst running in the dream, he actually got up and nailed a wall face first. Felt bad for the pooch… but still laughed.

    • IndyGirl

Nothing like seeing a dog running after a squirrel in their sleep πŸ˜€

  • AnyoneForCoffee

#9 irritable, hallucinating, disinterested in everything….sounds like students anyway.

#13 Salvador Dali would hold a spoon over a metal tray when going to sleep. When he nodded off, he would lose grip of the spoon, which would hit the metal tray, waking him up so he can quickly note down the dream he'd just had. Look at his paintings and you'll know this is true.

    • Master_Rahl

nice tidbit of info on Dali. I learned something today.

    • YUP

That's funny, I thought of Dali right when I saw that one too. But what he did wasn't typical dreaming. It's called a hypnagogic state. He was basically just hallucinating like crazy. It's that sort of in-between/limbo stage right before you fall sleep and right before you wake up.

      • AnyoneForCoffee

I have extremely vivid dreams when I nod off for a few seconds. I now have a name for that, many thanks!

    • I love Paula

hmm you peeked my interest i shall look this man up

        *piqued, not peeked.

        • Chyea

Thank God you're here! Can you imagine if no one would have fixed that shit?
          Wow

  • Empyrean

Dreams don't always have some underlying symbolic meaning. That's a myth. Most of them are acutally random firing of electrical signals in our brain and actually mean nothing at all.

    • Se7enplagues

Thank you! Man, I'm getting tired of people holding on to this widely debunked theory. Don't get my wrong, Freud was a genius but he was way off the mark with dream interpretation.

    • HUH?

sorry, but random firing of electrical signals wont produce a coherent story line like you find in a dream.

      • Empyrean

Coherent? I don't think that's the word you meant to use.. I dunno about you, but most of the dreams I experience aren't very logical. And it will do you no good arguing with me. Better talk to the scientists.

    • YUP

Yeah that's not all true. You're right when you say they don't all have a symbolic meaning. However, it isn't simply random firing of electrical signals. Much of dreaming has to do with memory consolidation, emotions and other biological processes. It isn't as random as you think, but just less researched.

      • Empyrean

Said much better than I. Thank you.

  • Frumpus

#4 Is more likely the other way around. You dream about drinking a lot of water because you are thirsty irl.

    • ThatGuy

That's exactly what the pic says.

      • HUH?

no, the pic is implying that the dream causes you to be thirsty. i have always felt that if you are thirsty, your dream wakes you up to tell you to go get a drink.

  • DaveB

The flux capacitor was conveived in a dream.

    • DSJPARKER

No, it was when Doc fell and hit his head.

  • T-Rizzle

We become paralyzed as we sleep not because we could be so "emotionally moved" from dreams that we would hurt ourselves, but because as we dream of say, walking around or playing a sport, the areas in the brain responsible for those controlling those movements are actually activated in the same way as when we were awake. If the brain didn't have a mechanism to paralyze the body as it slept, we would literally act out our dreams, as has been seen in brain damaged cats and dogs in the laboratory.

    • Empyrean

Some theory suggests that's a lot of "alien abductions" which involve subjects reporting being awake but paralized can be explained by the body being late to 'wake up'. Interesting stuff.

      • T-Rizzle

It's in REM sleep that the mind often brings out some of the biggest concerns that are currently stressing us. It's funny to note that the whole idea of alien abductions didn't actually become a widely reported phenomenon until it was depicted in the movies in the 40's and 50's, and people began to become afraid of aliens. Therefore, Empyrean, I'd say for all the alien abduction cases which aren't blatant lies or brought on by psychological disorders, there's a good chance that 100% of alien abduction stories are byproducts of sleep paralysis – thinking you're awake and being able to open your eyes and look around your bedroom, but actually are still dreaming (and paralyzed), and seeing hallucinations of
        people standing above you.

Had a dream that I was in prison. Made one guy cry because I offered him my banana pudding in the lunch line, but then turned around and gave it to somebody else instead. I'm a terrible person when I'm unconscious…

    • 2Dogs

subconciously you may want to give your banana pudding to a guy in prison?
