Chive! This ad thing at the bottom of the mobile site is straight bull shit!!!!!! Wtf?????? This is how I get my chive not to mention how many other people do but lose it please!

    • Mn dude

Right on man. This add blows goat. There are plenty of ways to bring in revenue ( like producing more than 12 t-shirts at a time to sell).

      • LucretiusCarus

You know that T-shirt is all manufactured demand bullshit. They probably have a huge cache of them but throttle the sales on purpose to drive up the demand.

I mean, these guys are often fuck ups but I have a hard time believing they're seriously THAT hapless.

        • Fig

No, they are that helpless, that's why this site is based off copying from others. I have no stupid ass Facebook, stop lying to me!!! Raaaa

    • https://www.facebook.com/MisterFuzzyPants Ari Darmon

oh yea… or you could spend 99 cents and get the pro version. but im sorry thats one double cheese burger.

    And first!

    • Yo Yo Ma

We got your results in. Unlike the usual 1%, you're only about 0.5% away from a chimp's DNA. But it's that slight difference that results in posting "first" after seeing a video that interesting.

  • justabill

    I love stuff like this.

      me too

    First: But not alone.

Neil Degrasse Tyson is a smart man who I find to be very cool

  • D3AN

"We have a badass over here!"
    Neil deGrass Tyson for President!

    • Katy

Yea, an astrophysicist for president, you dumb fucking idiot

      • Yeah

Don't you have some laundry or something to do, quietly?

      • Justin

guarantee he'd be better than any past president, more ethical too

      • Nicnac

        over react much?

  • New_Guy

1% is alot and i wonder how far another intelligent lifeform is from earth.

    • sam

Exactly. 1% of 100 is 1 which is very small. 1% of say 1 million is 10 thousand, which is a lot. Chromosome 1 alone has ~220 million base pairs. so the different 1% between humans and chimps is in the 10 millions

    • bob

Know what that higher being might be called?

      • waddup

        or Obi Wan

  • spliffen

Am I the only one, thinking this could have been told in a whole lot less time than 12 minutes?

    • Hank

I was getting ready for the amazing thought, but then the video ended.
If you couldn't summarize that in 4 or 5 sentences, you probably coudn't get through high school.

    • DDD

      you might be 2% different…

    • Ralph

After 12 minutes I wanted to hear more. In fact I want to know where he lectures so I can be apart of this mind nurturing experience.

      • spliffen

Seems that stating your honest opinion, will get you tons of votes down 🙂 Still, I claim my right to be anoyed by the rate of info he spits out, though, ralph, I will give you that, I most certanly would like to hear more about the subject as well.

        • SocialLubricant

I believe the reason you got tons of votes down is that many people disagree with your honest opinion. I doubt the act of stating your honest opinion alone garnered many, if any, down votes.

  • Hugh Mon

    I am the 1%

  • Muadieb

If we ever got to the point of meeting and greeting with intelligent life off of our own world we may have more in common with them to be able to communicate(i.e. space travel, development of society, etc.), but he brings up a very interesting point none the less. I agree that I'm jealous that our generation may never see that day.

  • ryd0

  • Power

If we ever do contact a species with greater intelligence, they would mostly be interested in the attributes that make us human. Them being of superior intelligence, they would already have answers to the many questions about the universe we are trying to solve. I don't think anything bad would happen IF one day such an event occurred, they would simply study us, maybe give us some tips, and be on their way. The universe is too vast for them to have any problem with us; there is plenty of room for all species.

    • Oregon_country

As long as they dont treat us like we treat the inferior species on our planet. Capture them, cage them, demesticate them, put them on show, hunt them, kill them. You know all that good stuff we do to the 1% below us.

    • motojunky27

I think there have been to many examples of different variables in cultures on earth, to make the assumption, that just because we are no threat, that they will act in a non-hostile fashion. Who has any idea what factors shape alien societies.

    • Hannah

And to think – they probably already know we exist.

    • http://twitter.com/edmerbrito @edmerbrito

Haven't you seen the movies dude? Earth is the place they're gonna come to when their planet is dyeing and are gonna extinguish all human beings. And they wept will smith and Tom cruise waiting for their asses

    • http://twitter.com/edmerbrito @edmerbrito

Last part shoulda said "but that's ok we got will smith and Tom cruise waiting got their asses 😝

    • Nilbog

Michio Kaku has said that if a species of greater intelligence then us were to make contact, one that had the ability of interstellar travel, etc. etc., the simple fact that we were able to observe them would mean they had already decided to allow us to live. He likened us to ants standing next to a super highway in comparison. It would be as simple for them to utterly annihilate us, and all record of us from history, as it is for us to step on an anthill.

      • Grammar_nazi

        It's a comparison.

    • SocialLubricant

But what if one of them takes a taste of us just out of curiosity and discovers we're delicious. They would probably be pretty quick about finding ways to make our skin crispy while maintaining a delicous interior moistness. I think it would take them a while longer to figure out what to force feed us to achieve the most delicate and tasty foie gras.

  • Oregon_country

Man, if i didn't feel like a moron before this video. I sure as hell do now.

    • saltygary

But what is cool about him is he doesn't make you feel like a idiot. He just wants to teach, enlighten and promote astrophysics. He is a very refreshing person to listen to.

  • Irish2Ice

    Mind Blown

Cool stuff, check out Michio Kaku

  • 8track technology

Did we not learn anything from the Planet of the apes.

  • plaguarism

He's pretty much just repeated Carl Sagan from the very first episode of the 1981 Cosmos series. "We're made of stars."
Also his take on other life out there is just repeating Sagan.
Obviously the passing of Sagan left a great void in the art of making the cosmos understandable for the masses, and Tyson is filling that gap. But you can't just repeat the thoughts of someone like Sagan and expect to be seen anywhere in near the same great league.

    • Jack burton

I didnt hear him say he wanted to be remembered in the same league as anyone! He loved sagan too cant he express what he has learned or repeat his brilliance? We all repeat what we have learned or been taught at some stage of our life right?
He gave people a concept to concider. A lot of people would of/still are oblivious to it. Im thankful he shared it be it his own or Sagan's.
If Sagan was sat next to him im sure he would of said it!

      • douche

Dude! You had it all. The screen name, the response, the theory and then you had to finish it with "would of"…….booooooooooooooooooo

        • SocialLubricant

          Ha! Well played.

    • https://www.facebook.com/justinMski Justin Michalski

Additionally, it is the ability to clearly convey these ideas to the majority, and with humor no less, that makes him what he is. The fact that this is a clip of Tyson on theChive, and not Sagan, is testament.

    • OnehandJack

We are all just dwarves standing on the shoulders of giants.

NDT just so happens to be a tall dwarf compared to most of us.

    • JDB85

Personally I like Tyson's delivery more than I do Sagan's.

    • plagiarism

      It's spelled "PLAGIARISM" not "PLAGUARISM"

  • MattKL

Interesting, if kinda depressing thought. This is why Neil Degrasse Tyson is the man.

    • davo

it's still massively based on conjecture and the assumption (which all scientists seem to make) is that an alien lifeform is going to be automatically smarter than us. maybe any planets in other star systems that are even remotely close to earth that harbour life are not even up the the evolutionary part of animals that are as smart as early mammals. What most people fail to realise is yes there could be a star wars-type galaxy in the universe but if it is on the other side it will never ever be found by this planet. what these guys need to do is stop telling everyone how abundant life probably is in the universe and start educating people on how massive the universe is.

  • mrmostlymittens

This guy never fails to amaze me

  • Jim

Way too early in the morning for that deep shit. Can't go back to sleep.

  • Oddie

    Cool story bro

    • FortBurg

  • IrishWolfhound

Eh………the Panspermia hypothesis is pretty much bullshit.

    • TheJesus

Someone let NDT know that his theory has been debunked on a comment thread at TheChive. He'll be bummed, I'm sure.

      • JDB85

Uhhhh, I believe TheJesus just may have been being sarcastic….

    • SARmedic

Like how seeds get caught in the jet stream and cross continents. It is a very viable possibility…unless you are closed minded.

      • Eric

But.. IrishWolfhound said it was bullshit without proving giving any kind of structured fact against it.
The man must know what he's talking about. Carry on.
