“Delta” is traditionally recruited from guys from the 75th Rangers. The actual process is crazy (even the word “traditionally” should be taken softly). Not to go into details but unlike their Navy counter-parts the S.E.A.L.s, when guys go in for the hellish trials for Ranger SF, a hundred guys may try-out…and maybe 1 or 2 guys will make it onto a team. Reason being, each SF team decides, as a team, who they want to join. I don’t want to go into too much detail b/c my (former Ranger) source would rather keep it a little quiet. Long-story short, it’s not “did you ring the bell and quit” like the Navy S.E.A.L.s…it’s simply, the teams decide…no questions…no “but I survived the trials”…they chose, end of story. As such, I’ve been told, a hundred guys could go in, do all the physical trials and in the end, (out of those hundred that tried-out) the teams may pick zero of those guys.
That’s why the saying goes:
“…and then there’s Delta, which doesn’t exist”
