A huge plot twist is in the works for ‘The Winds of Winter’ (18 Photos)
In a recent interview with
IGN George R.R. Martin, the author of the incomplete book series behind the HBO show ‘Game of Thrones,’ said the next book ‘The Winds of Winter’ would contain a plot twist that viewers won’t see in the show. The reason being HBO has already killed off a key character to the twist. Martin notes that there are many characters who are dead in the show but not the books so it’s not too big of a spoiler. Below are all the characters that the twist could involve based on Martin’s words.
Rakharo – He is one of Daenerys’ Dothraki Bloodriders. In the show he was killed after being sent on a scouting mission all the way back in season 2. In the books, he is currently searching for Daenarys who has been missing ever since climbing on her black dragon’s back and flying away.
Irri – She is one of Daenerys’ Dothraki handmaidens. In the show she was killed in season 2 when Daenerys’ dragons are stolen. In the books, she is also part of one of the search parties tracking down Daenerys.
Mago – He is a Dothraki Bloodrider. In the show he was killed by Khal Drogo after insulting him. In the books he rides for for Khal Jhaqo who took over the Dothraki horde when Khal Drogo died. He and Daenerys hate each other.
Ser Meryn Trant – He is a member of the King’s Guard. In one of the most brutal yet satisfying scenes of season 5, Arya straight up murders him while he’s in a brothel with little girls. I won’t go into the details, but Arya is not somebody whose bad side you want to be on. In the books he is in King’s Landing with Cersei.
Xaro Xhoan Daxos – He is the self-proclaimed merchant prince of Qarth and a member of the Thirteen, a prominent group of traders in the city. After betraying Daenarys in season 2, she locks Xaro Xhoan Daxos in his vault to die. In the books he never betrays Daenerys in Qarth. However, he does visit her in Meereen in an attempt to get her to leave for Westeros. She refuses his offer so he and Qarth declare war.
Pyat Pree – He is the warlock of Qarth. In the show he is incinerated by Daenerys’ dragons after he kidnaps her. In the books he tries to kill Daenerys after Drogon sets the House of the Undying on fire but fails. He is still trying to kill her but has most likely been captured by Euron Greyjoy.
Jojen Reed – He is the greenseer who accompanies Bran Stark to the Three-Eyed Raven. He dies in season 4 after being stabbed by an undead skeleton warrior just as they reach their goal. In the books he survives the undead ambush and is still with Bran in the Three-Eyed Raven’s cave.
Hizdahr zo Loraq – He is an aristocrat from Meereen who marries Daenerys to form a political alliance. He is slain in season 5 when the Sons of the Harpy attempt to assassinate Daenerys in the gladiator arena. In the books he survives the ordeal and his placed under house arrest.
Grenn and Pyp – They are two of Jon Snow’s best friends in the Night’s Watch. Both die in season 4 during the battle with Mance Rayder’s wildling army. They are both alive in the books and still at Castle Black.
Shireen Baratheon – She is the daughter of Stannis Baratheon who survived the disease Greyscale. Stannis burns her alive as a sacrifice to Lord of Light in disturbing scene in season 5. In the books she is still alive but Martin has confirmed that she will suffer a similar fate.
Selyse Baratheon – She is Stannis’ wife and a fanatical follower of the Lord of Light. After Shireen is burned alive in season 5, Selyse can’t handle the guilt and hangs herself. She is still alive in the books but my guess is she won’t do well after Shireen’s death.
Stannis Baratheon – It is implied in the show that he is killed by Brienne of Tarth but we don’t actually witness his death. In the books he is planning for his battle with the Boltons.
Myrcella Baratheon – She is the daughter of Cersei and Jamie’s incestuous relationship. She is poisoned in season 5 and dies right after learning that Jamie is her father. In the books she survives an assassination attempt but is left with a hideous scar on her face and loses her ear.
Mance Rayder – He is the leader of the wildlings and a former member of the Night’s Watch. He is burned at the stake in the show in season 5 after his army is defeated. In the books he allies with Jon Snow and is captured by Ramsay Bolton while trying to rescue Jeyne Poole.
Barristan Selmy – He is a member of Daenerys’ Queen’s Guard. He dies in season 4 after being ambushed by the Sons of the Harpy. The ambush never occurs in the books and he is still in Meereen but his death in the show probably means his book death is not far off.
Jeyne Westerling (Talisa Stark) – She is the woman that Robb Stark married. In the show she is known as Talisa and she dies in the Red Wedding. In the books she is not present at the Red Wedding and is taken back to her family in Lannister controlled lands.
Catelyn Stark – In both the show and the books Catelyn dies in the Red Wedding. But in the books she is revived by the Red Priest Thoros of Myr in the same way that he revived Beric Dondarrion. In her revived form she is known as Lady Stoneheart and is hell-bent on getting revenge. Unfortunately, the show writers decided to drop her story.
