Madame Delphine LaLaurie’s House of Terror (Season 3)
Kathy Bates made her AHS debut in Season 3 as Delphine LaLaurie, a 19th century socialite in New Orleans with a taste for blood. The show runners didn’t have much to make up on this one, LaLaurie was a savage woman all on her own. She put on airs as a lively party host, but behind closed doors her slaves were brutally tortured and murdered. The horrors had been going on unnoticed for a while, but people began to pay attention when she chased a 12-year-old slave off the edge of the roof, trying to whip her for brushing LaLaurie’s hair wrong. The girl died and LaLaurie dumped her body down the well.
Nothing really happened to her except for a bad reputation, but then the cook set the house on fire during a party. The neighbors realized LaLaurie had no intention of letting the slaves escape alive so they rushed into the house and found dead slaves chained to the walls. They also found slaves alive, but mutilated or dismembered. Body parts and organs were scatted all over the floor. LaLaurie escaped town before she could be punished for her terrible acts.
Side note, ever since she fled New Orleans, no one has owned the house for more than 5 years (including Nicolas Cage). Some say it’s cursed, and of course haunted.
