Finally, we come to Zardoz. Why is this disturbing? There’s James Bond, in a man-thong and thigh-high boots, in a film where humanity is stuck on a post-apocalyptic earth, growing food for a group called ‘the Eternals’ that worship a floating head named Zardoz. When one of them, Zed, finds his way onto Zardoz and travels to their home planet, and disrupts their whole existence.
I just can’t get over this image. That’s disturbing. Moreso, the film derives its plot from Wizard of Oz, where there’s a person behind the deity, who brings about the events of the film to inspire change. This film actually has quite a following in some circles and is screened several times a year, all over the world. The subject matter of the film is worthy of a watch, but this image is burned into my retinas forever.
