Before the time of internet celebrities and Instagram models, Hugh Hefner was king.
In 1952, Hefner left his job as a copywriter for Esquire when they denied him a $5 raise. A year later, with a bank loan of $800 and $8,000 raised from 45 investors, he started Playboy (Originally named Stag Party). In December 1953, the first issue featuring Marilyn Monroe on the cover. The first issue sold over 50,000 copies.
