Taco Time Salsa Bar
The Dalles, Oregon
This Oregon restaurant was the location of the largest bioterrorism attack in US history. In 1984, a woman brought her own bag of “salsa” – a light brown liquid, that she squirted into the salsa bucket and into the salad dressing area.
This woman was a member of a local commune called the Rajneesh, who were trying to take over the local towns and government to increase their footprint and voice in Oregon. Wearing red and carrying guns, they tried everything to to expand and when the locals didn’t play ball, they started poisoning local businesses with salmonella – their brown liquid. 751 people fell ill, and 45 were hospitalized, but thankfully, no one died. It took over a year to get to the bottom of it, and when it was all said and done, the leaders were caught, but not before it was discovered that they had an illegal wiretapping operation and were in the process of trying to assassinate the US Attorney for Oregon.
Still, over 20 years later, this remains as the worst case of bioterrorism in the US, and, surprisingly enough, Taco Time is still in business.
