Not to romanticize it (because they did go through hell), but grandparents have the best stories about their childhoods, especially if they came from Europe. I know that I used to love hearing about the daring run my grandmother made from her childhood home in the former Yugoslavia, to freedom in a neutral country before the Germans and the Soviets started rushing in. Now, looking back, I can’t imagine doing half the things that they did because living during World War II, in any part of Western Europe, was a shitshow. And while they may be getting old, and memories are fading, sometimes, the stuff they keep from back then, tells more than the stories ever could.
An Imgur user by the handle dieWollmaus, recently inherited a home from her great aunt in Germany. Inside that home was a heavy floor safe – old and rusted, it looked like it hadn’t been opened in decades, if not longer.
It looked pretty ominous.
