Basketball actually has a clear origin, although not a surprising one. In 1881, James Naismith was a physical education instructor at Springfield College. Because the winter months restricted sports to indoors, Naismith was tasked with finding a intensely physical sport that could be played away from the cold. Combining Rugby, Lacrosse, and Soccer, the new sport of basketball was conceived. While minor changes have been made, the game is still very close to the original sport that Naismith created. Most notably, in 1997 there was a rule change stating dogs can no longer play.
