Mike Myers is all about another ‘Austin Powers’ movie
Feeling a little randy, baby?
Good, because another
Austin Powers movie may be on the horizon sometime in the future. Both the star of the hit spy spoofer and the director have expressed a desire to bring the groovy man of mystery back for a fourth film.
Mike Myers opened up to The Hollywood Reporter about the surprisingly heartbreaking origin of the character, and talked about the possibility of another sequel.
“After my dad died in 1991, I was taking stock of his influence on me as a person and his influence on me with comedy in general. So Austin Powers was a tribute to my father, who [introduced me to] James Bond, Peter Sellers, The Beatles, The Goodies, Peter Cook and Dudley Moore,” he said.
“I would love to do another, but you just have to see. I was devastated by my father’s death. But to have that turn into something that makes people happy is unbelievably satisfying. It’s that kind of stuff you never get used to or get tired of.”
Austin Powers was the directorial debut for Jay Roach, and he too has expressed interest in bringing the film that put him on the map back to the big screen.
“I would say it’s in a latent phase right now but someday if we find the right idea that seems to have it earn itself, for sure,” he said. “Mike gave me the break of a lifetime in letting me direct so I’m always good to go.”
Unfortunately, the movie has been trapped in development Hell. The massive success of the franchise generated a ton of revenue for New Line Cinema, but a costly suit with
Lord of the Rings director Peter Jackson and a string of box office flops like The Golden Compass resulted in the company being bought by Time Warner and the project being put on an indefinite hiatus.
Also, Mike Myers hasn’t done a movie in 10 years. Hopefully, he’s just waiting for the perfect (and shagadelic) opportunity.
No one can be sure what a fourth installment would look like, but Myers says it would likely revolve around Dr. Evil’s relationship with his son.
How do you guys feel about an
Austin Powers reboot… does that make you HORNY, baby? Yeah!
