The power of a good story is one of the strongest things on the planet. If you can plant a seed of even the smallest amount of belief in the head, a scary story can become more than just a story. These are a few examples of lore from around the world that feature some deadly creatures.
Kelpie is a beast of Scottish lore. This one comes in the form of a ghostly ‘water horse’ that lures people into the water by emitting a cry that resembles a drowning man or boy. Once the victim gets close enough, Kelpie grabs them and plunges them deep into a watery grave.
Redcap also comes from Scottish lore and is said to take the shape of a goblin in a red hat. It hides within old castle walls and is said to kill anyone that it comes across.
This British villain of lore comes from England. She, or it, is a witch that is typically said to be a very pale shade of blue. Her favourite meal? Humans. More specifically, she likes to snatch up kids and eat them right up. She also is said to have iron ‘talons’ rather than nails.
Cerberus is a massive three-headed dog monster that comes from Ancient Greek Mythology. It is said to guard the gates of the underworld, to ensure that nothing that isn’t supposed to get in there comes in, and nothing that isn’t supposed to leave gets out.
The people of France who fully believe in this beast would advise you not to go into any deep dark caves. This monster is said to be a giant, underground mollusk that has a penchant for swallowing people whole.
This beast comes from some Native American lore, and is said to have once been human, before extreme hunger drove them mad enough to start eating other humans.
These creatures of Navajo legend are said to be witches. They use medicine and black magic to transform into evil coyotes who then steal money and other precious items.
This creature of deception is said to take the shape of a beautiful woman with backward feet. She seduces men and leads them into the woods before consuming them whole.
This Australian water demon lurks in swamps, bogs, and other dark, murky watery areas. The second someone gets anywhere near it, it drags them down into the water and eats them alive.
The Banshee is somewhat of a bad omen in Ireland. It is said to take the form of a ghostly woman (either old or young) who lets out a blood curling scream when someone is about to die.
This is essentially the Irish Headless Horseman, but his weapon of choice is a fucking human spine. It uses it as a whip. You can try to outrun him, but if he stops galloping next to you and whispers your name, you’re dead within the second.
This Norse creature of lore is essentially an undead, superhuman, invincible beast of a viking that can survive anything you throw at it while crushing you with absolute ease.
The ghoul is a demonic creature of Arabic lore that consumes anything it desires. Human, animal, anything. It then takes the shape of whatever it last ate.
This demonic woman of Indonesian mythology is said to have died while pregnant. Now, tortured and still roaming the earth, she claws at the stomach of her victims and then consumes their organs.
Teke Teke is a Japanese demon girl who was split in half by a train. She drags her corpse around while looking to slice people up with a scythe.
