A little over 4 years ago, a volunteer EMT from Fluvanna County, VA named Kenny George wrote an email to theCHIVE that would eventually change the way this community looked at itself and how the world looked at Chive Nation. Kenny was part of a rescue squad that provided free medical aid to the rural county. He explained how the government was pulling the plug on their funding and that the people of Fluvanna County were too prideful to ask for medical aid if they couldn’t afford it. People’s lives were on the line and Kenny refused to give up. His desperate email to theCHIVE was a Hail Mary, of sorts.
The next day, we posted the story of Fluvanna County Rescue on theCHIVE and set a $20,000 fundraising goal, not really knowing what to expect. By the end of the day, the Chivers had stepped up to the plate and knocked it out of the park with over $30,000. Chive Nation had saved the whole rescue squad and created a new term, Flash Charity.
The basis for what would become Chive Charities was born.
Since that time, this crazy community of misfits has established itself as what can only be described as “easily the most generous community on and off the internet today.” To date, Chivers have banded together to support hundreds of underdogs. Chive Charities has awarded more than $3.5 million in grants, combined with over $2 million raised in flash charity campaigns. That $5.5 million total doesn’t even factor in the more than $3 million raised for worthy causes in need by Bona Fide and unofficial Chive Chapters around the world.
And while those numbers may seem amazing, it’s really the recipients we’ve helped that are making the biggest impact on our community. Their stories capture our attention and our hearts. They motivate us to give $5 to a worthy cause when we only have $20 left in our bank accounts. They are the ones inspiring this community to make the world 10% happier.
I would like to share a few amazing updates that demonstrate how Chive Nation’s charitable impact is continuing to make a huge difference.
