It all started with an easy gesture. With the moratorium on evictions set to end in two days, I thought I’d just pay as many Chivers’ rents as I could. The end of my checkbook was going to be where this story ended.
Instead it snowballed. We received thousands of emails from people who needed help and thousands more from people offering to help with this looming shitstorm.
With the help of our Central Florida Chivers, we were able to get a GoFundMe launched in 24 hours flat (no easy task btw, somebody should bake those guys and gals some cookies.)
I hit ‘publish’ on the story and hopped on a call with my sister, Megan, to catch up on life. Exactly 11 minutes into my call I got a text that we’d hit the goal…. then another and another. Eleven minutes to $20,000??? That’s never happened before.
But by the time I got off the call it had doubled, and by hour’s end it had tripled.
