In a nutshell, boy, I sure do. But before I come off as the bitter, old curmudgeon, understand that I do realize there are great and important social issues worth championing, I agree. Sometimes words said in jest as a kid or an adult really shouldn’t be uttered anymore because the meaning behind them is so grossly offensive and has no place in modern society. Sometimes we do need to recognize the inconsistency in treatment between races, genders, sexual orientations, and on the list goes. My gripe, however, is with people who take their social crusading too far and insist on chastizing individuals and inciting a war of words and other divisive behavior. Unfortunately, we’re living in a world that is increasingly auto-piloting into an offended rage. And this mentality is dangerous.
What’s all the more terrifying about overly sensitive people who perpetually fly off the handle, seemingly looking to start a fight, is that they’re becoming the very thing they seek to remedy–a bully. Sadly, these days we live in a highly divisive era. Emotions are as tumultuous as ever which makes for a society of people all walking on eggshells afraid of what they can or cannot say based on the popular opinion of the day. Original thought and individuality are being replaced with the “Just tell me what to say?!” mentality. And that isn’t helping anyone’s cause.
For all the good intentions of “social crusaders,” a great deal of harm can come from this aggressive mob-mentality, like inhibiting free speech, and ultimately creating an atmosphere of coddled babies who crumble at the first sign of frustration in their lives. Hearing other’s opinions that don’t align with our own is how personal growth and societal progress takes place. That’s why I’ve always suggested hearing news from multiple sources of varying ideologies as opposed to just seeking out those mentalities that most align with our own. This is healthy, and diversity amongst all people should be a protected ideal.
So please, take these images in the spirit they’re intended. Laugh, & lighten up for goodness sake.
