It seems like there’s every sort of variation on the Monopoly game we all simultaneously love/hate and cheat at out in the market. Which is odd, because no one I know actually knows how to play it. We all pretty much make up our own rules then get pissed off when we go bankrupt or the game just doesn’t seem to end. But, in any case, someone out there managed to make Monopoly even cooler, but creating her very own Harry Potter-themed version.
According to Jenna Shaw, a Bored Panda user, her friend really wanted a Harry Potter Monopoly board, but since they don’t exist, she decided to surprise her friend for her birthday, with her very own, custom-made board. Taking 80+ hours to make it, I’d say it’s a pretty magical game.
Whose hat do I need to sort to get one of these?
Step one was to come up with the properties themselves and replace things like railroads with brooms and portkeys. She had to do it in reverse so that it could be laid down on her board surface later.
Now, she had to transfer the customized board layout onto the wood. She laid out a layer of polycrylic, put the paper down on top, allowed it to dry and rubbed away the paper, leaving the ink behind and coating the surface with a protective layer.
Next up was to finish the rubbing with some wood burned edges on the lines and final touches.
In the centre, she placed a very mysterious image of Hogwarts and wood burned some lines for the cards.
Man, that epic approach to Hogwarts for the first time still gets me.
She even made up her own cards for the properties. Looks like a lot of my favourites are there: The Shrieking Shack, The Leaky Cauldron and the Joke Shop.
She also turned the Railroads into Transportation Methods (Knight Bus, Floo Powder, Portrays and Hogwarts Express), and the Utilities became the newspapers (The Daily Prophet and the Quibbler).
As for the cards, the Chance cards became Charms, while the Community Chest became the Potions cards.
For the houses and hotels that gradually spring up on a property and drive you bankrupt, she took old Disney Monopoly pieces and gave them a makeover.
Instead of paper money, she used Wizard currency of knuts, sickles and galleons, but put her own variation on them, making the values 10 (knuts), 50 (sickles) and 100 (galleons).
A poker case served as the perfect carrying case for the game-holding all the cards, tokens and pieces. She also printed out her own variation of the Monopoly rules to fit the Harry Potter universe, and completed the case with gold spray-painted dividers and a Gryffindor colour scheme.
And here’s the final layout for the coins.
On the outside, she put the Gringotts logo and that was the finishing touch.
Now the game was ready to become the most magical birthday present ever.
