Many iterations of the same themed meme have been popping up around the internet for a few years now that involves a photo of a conservatively dressed woman from around the early 1900’s juxtaposed with a modern-day Instagram shot of a girl clothed in a uber-scandalous way. It always reads along the lines of “pics of your grandma that you find in 2016,” versus the second photo you find years down the road saying “pics found of your grandma in 2090.” All the meme is getting at is that women today aren’t as modest and “classy” as a couple generations ago. And whether that’s remotely true or not is debatable, but the aim is the shame today’s women for dressing too sexy.
Now I’m not going to pretend for one millisecond that I give two healthy fucks about girls showing a little extra skin in photos today, even if it borders on narcissistic or skanky at times. Hell, it’s kind of my job to embrace the idea of girls with a healthy vision of themselves who don’t mind snapping a sexy photo for a little extra attention. Al Pacino mirrored my mindset best when in ‘The Devil’s Advocate’ he uttered “Vanity, definitely my favorite Sin!” God bless the devil on that one!
So when a Tumblr user from Colorado posted a story about her great-grandmother’s youth it sent the internet into a fit of laughter as she managed to disprove, or at least challenge, the notion behind the popular meme.
