Lived in Russia for four months at the start of the Chechen war. This brings back memories – it didn't look much different to this back then. Mostly good memories, though – the people there rock, and know how to have a good time. It isn't about having stuff.

Come on guys… I'm Russian and I live in Russia. Although it is a giant bottomless shithole it doesn't always look like that. These are photographs of the darkest and spookiest villages and other distant corners of the country. Urban Russia is far not that creepy.

Generally I do not learn post on blogs, but I would like to say that this write-up very pressured me to try and do it! Your writing style has been surprised me. Thanks, very great article.

I know what you were trying to do. However, I have been to Moscow and St. Petersburg. Both beautiful cites with a rich history. It's only fair you show some of that. Russia is an awesome country with hot chicks!

It's easy to criticize and make fun of other countries poverty. We need to look in our back yard and realize that some people in this country (USA) are not better off. Perhaps people in our country dont have "hideous wallpaper" but we do have lead paint. Appreciate what you have and help out when you can inside or outside your country. We are all controlled by corrupt governments.

The Russian government owns the biggest natural gas extraction company in the world. So guess who benefits from this.. not a few rich aholes.

Number 5 from the top, Russia…$90,510,000,000 in the bank. Not in debt.
So not bad for a nation with 23,000,000 dead in World War II.
You think the people in these photos had bad bathroom decor? I know people who lived in London after WW II in similar circumstances…my family.
