Today the United States opens it’s 2014 World Cup with a redemption match against Ghana. The same team that knocked ‘The Yanks’ out in South Africa in the 93 minute of their elimination game. If you’re following the games played so far, DraftStreet has a $5,000 freeroll game that starts tomorrow. Once again the US has been placed into the “group of death.” They emerged last time and heres how it was done.
After an early goal by England, Clint Dempsey tied the game with a blocked shot that slow rolled in, helped by what was called the “hand of god.”
Next came Landon Donovan’s amazing shot. Down 0-2 to Slovenia, it opened the door for the desperately needed comeback.
Michael Bradley’s goal in the 84th minute tied the game, and gave the United States a chance at moving on with a win over Algeria (among a few other factors).
Against Algeria, a scoreless game left the United States out of the running to move on in the 2010 World Cup.
In the 91st minute, Landon Donovan finished off a spectacular effort to give the US it’s birth into the elimination bracket.
It’s first appearance since 2002 when the team made it to the quarter finals.
After going 60 minutes down 1-0 against Ghana, Donovan was brought down inside the penalty box. His 3rd goal of the World Cup ultimately was undone in extra time when Ghana netted it’s second shot.
Today Ghana and USA once again face each other in the city of Natal, Brazil. With Germany and Portugal waiting, every goal scored is important.
