There’s a mystery brewing in Peterborough, Ontario.
Late last week, some local residents saw these two teens walk onto the ice covering Peterborough’s Otonabee River, and with branches, pushed themselves out in to the middle of the river on an ice floe.
The whole thing was caught on YouTube by CHEX News.
With matching jackets and a laptop, they started floating down the river, steering themselves with the branches.
According to the Peterborough Examiner, onlookers called 911 and yelled to the boys that help was on the way, despite the fact that it appeared that their makeshift raft and trip down the river was intentional.
What makes this stranger is that they started yelling obscenities at the onlookers and when they were told that firefighters were on their way, they told people to “Fuck off” and leave them alone.
By the time the firefighters arrived, they were moving down the river pretty quickly.
Except it doesn’t seem like these kids were that smart.
If the current picks up suddenly, there’s a reason, like a waterfall, or an intake pipe or in their case, a hydro-electric dam. Even when the firefighters did arrive, the teens didn’t want to leave their little ice dinghy.
Guessing when they were told that there’s was a good chance they would get maimed, they decided a rescue was welcome.
Though not too urgently, as one of them decided to wave. What a shit.
The jury is still out on who these teens were, why they were out on the ice floe. All that is certain is that they weren’t from Peterborough, and they’re not saying why they were out there.
The police gave them a stern warning and sent them off on their way. Most likely to go break a mailbox or kick a snowman.
